Green Gables Heritage Place
Opened officially in August 2019, the Green Gables Visitor Centre is the starting point for all visitors to Green Gables Heritage Place. This bright, modern building has many accessibility features and a variety of services for guests, including the ticketing/welcome desk, spacious lobby, washroom facilities (including a gender-neutral washroom), and an exhibit hall featuring interpretive exhibits on L.M. Montgomery’s life and writings. There is also a gift shop operated by a third party that sells books and merchandise of all kinds.
Exhibit Hall
The true heart of the Green Gables Visitor Centre, the exhibit hall is a bright and engaging space with exhibits that explore the life and career development of L.M. Montgomery, the writing of her story, Anne of Green Gables, and the ongoing impact of her writing on a local, national and global scale.
Along with the factual story of L.M. Montgomery and the fictional story of Anne of Green Gables, visitors can also learn more about the Cavendish landscape that inspired Montgomery and played an important role in the books. You will notice themes of imagination, beauty, friendship, belonging, freedom and self throughout the exhibits. Parks Canada also worked with the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island to share the story of Mi'kmaq people in Cavendish.
Whether you know nothing at all about this fascinating Canadian author or you’ve read everything in print on the subject, we hope you’ll find a visit here both inspiring and entertaining.
When exploring the exhibit hall, be sure to take note of the following...
- Block model of Green Gables House – Can you guess how many blocks are included in it? Check out this time lapse video of its construction!
- Visual storybook – Take a look. What captions would you give each image?
- Montgomery’s life as outlined “scrapbook style” – Montgomery was an avid scrapbooker, keeping many volumes full of snaps, clippings, and other memorabilia. What can you learn about her through the images you see? Can you guess what animal was her favourite?
- Photographs – In addition to being a writer, Montgomery was also an avid photographer. Many of the photos included in our exhibits are her own. What do you think of them? What do you think of black and white photos, in general?
- International book cover wall – Anne of Green Gables has been translated and published all over the world in different languages. Without looking at the labels, how many of the languages can you identify on our international book cover wall? Which covers do you like best?
