Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site

On a hill high above the Saint John harbour, stands a sentinel to the city’s storied military history.

During the War of 1812, when the US declared war against Great Britain, Royal Engineers built the stone tower to protect New Brunswick's largest and most important port.

Carleton Martello Tower, once used to house magazine and military stores has also served as a garrison, prison, and observation post. A film evoking the tower’s history and an award-winning exhibit is on offer in the Visitor Centre. You can envision soldier life as you take in a rifled musket demonstration or catch occasional military re-enactments during the summer.

Don’t miss the panoramic view from the top of the hill, where you can cast a glance at sailboats in the Saint John harbour, and dramatic vista to the Bay of Fundy.
